A raw score can overplace a learner who guessed a few difficult items. This diagnostic uses cumulative hurdles: to receive B1 or B2, you need enough correct answers overall, evidence in that band, and a stable pattern below it.

German reading test FAQ
Is this an official German CEFR exam?
No. This is a free, low-stakes reading diagnostic aligned to A1–B2 reading skills. It gives you a useful starting band and next-step plan, but it does not award a certificate or replace a proctored exam.
How accurate is this German reading level test?
The result is intentionally conservative. It uses ten progressively harder items and requires evidence inside a level before awarding that band. A short test cannot sample every text type, so treat the result as a placement signal and confirm it through sustained reading practice.
Why are there no English translations during the test?
A reading test must measure what you understand from German, not what you can match against an English gloss. Translations appear only in the answer review after scoring, when they can support learning without inflating the result.
What happens if my result is A1?
You will get a direct A1 → A2 route: matched German readers for immediate practice plus a MeloLingua sign-up link with your language already selected. The goal is not to “pass A1”; it is to turn today’s reading evidence into the next reachable skill band.
Does a reading result equal my overall language level?
No. CEFR profiles can be uneven: your reading may be stronger than your listening, spoken interaction, or writing. This page reports reading only. Use the estimate to choose texts, then train listening and speaking separately.
Can I retake the German reading test?
Yes, but an immediate retake mostly measures memory. Read at the recommended band first, then return after several weeks. A stronger pattern across the harder items is more meaningful than simply remembering the correct options.
