Sofía went out early on Saturday because she wanted to buy freshly baked bread before a line formed. At the plaza bakery, Don Ramón knew almost everyone by name and tossed greetings around with a towel over his shoulder. This time he offered her a warm piece of rosemary focaccia and asked if she had lots of exams that week too. Sofía laughed: she said yes, but that all she wanted that weekend was good bread and sleep without alarms. She paid, as usual, with small bills and dropped the coins into her jacket pocket. She crossed the plaza under light drizzle, thinking the smell of yeast was plan enough for the day.
