How a path works

One story,
one outcome per unit.

A unit is three episodes and a checkpoint. The episodes teach the scene you are about to need; the checkpoint is an unseen one you sit without scaffolding. Nothing here is a word list, and nothing is out of order.

  1. 01

    Listen & Read

Hear the scene while you follow the words. Meaning and sound arrive together, which is why nothing here needs translating first.

    5 min
  2. 02

    Shadow & Speak

Repeat the useful lines out loud while the audio keeps going. You copy the rhythm of a whole phrase instead of assembling it word by word.

    7 min
  3. 03

    Build the Sentence

Rebuild the lines you just heard from their pieces. This is where a phrase stops being something you recognise and becomes something you can produce.

    5 min
  4. 04

    Quiz

Retrieve what the scene contained, without looking back. Forgetting once and recalling is what makes the next unit easier.

    3 min

The checkpoint skips build the sentence on purpose: you cannot rehearse it, you sit it. That is how the path finds out whether the unit's outcome survived.

Every lesson is free to read. The first 2 episodes of each path also translate every line, and they cover the whole outcome of Unit 1.See the full breakdown on the Spanish path

Answers

Starting a language from zero: questions

Direct answers about the 6 Foundations paths, the free boundary, and what a path asks of you.

Q01

Which languages have a Foundations path?

Spanish, French, German, Italian, Korean, Russian. Each is a complete eight-unit A1 sequence built from one continuous story, not a shelf of unrelated texts.

Q02

Is Foundations free?

Every one of the 192 lessons across the 6 paths is free to read. The first 2 episodes of each path also translate every line, and together they cover that path's whole Unit 1 outcome. Premium adds support around the lessons - every line translated, unlimited word help, and no daily waits - never extra lessons.

Q03

How long does one A1 path take?

Eight units of four lessons, about 20 minutes each. That is roughly 11 hours per language, before whatever you replay. Most learners take one lesson a day rather than racing the path.

Q04

Do I need to know anything before I start?

No. Unit 1 is the same job in every language - greet someone, say your name, and say where you are from - and it starts on the first line of the first scene.

Q05

What if I already know some of the language?

Skip the path and start from the story library instead: Spanish, French, German, Italian, plus Korean and Russian stories at A1 and A2.
