Sophie climbs onto the seven a.m. bus while the city is still sleepy. The driver shuts the door fast, so she digs three coins from her tiny pouch. She greets a woman juggling a swollen grocery sack. Sliding toward the cracked window she watches drizzle lace the pane. Produce comes to mind—after French class she still owes le marché. When she hops down she thanks the driver and sprints toward the school gate, soles damp beneath meager rain.
