Isa cut through Buen Retiro because book fairs sounded like neighborhood WhatsApp rumours until scents mingled fresh paper with softly roasted pimientos—it never felt staged for anyone’s feed even when cameras wandered by. She had wanted a heavyweight essay yet froze beneath a tarp when a hawker yelled titles as confidently as if commas obeyed him. While the sluggish queue marinated under fractured sunlight she grabbed a queer novel whose heroine squirrelled away vanished posters—a blend of giggles and gut-punch pacing she needed immediately. Nearby, an author inked handwritten dedications and Isa conceded that brutal late middles occasionally make her shelve unfinished books rather than bully herself through fluff. Leaving with oversized envelopes, she swore whole dialogues spilled from raincoat pockets; stalls train you toward polite volume when crowds press close. Dialing her sister before supper felt inevitable—some yarns spark only once someone hazards a clumsy question under canvas before carrying too-beautiful paper home for another Friday dream.
