Spanish grammar · two ways to express purpose and relation

Por vs para: decide by cause, route, exchange or destination

Use por for the cause, route, means, duration, or exchange behind an action; use para for its destination, recipient, purpose, or deadline.

Think of por as looking backward or through the action — why, how, by what route, or in exchange for what. Think of para as pointing forward toward a goal, recipient, destination, or due date.

Answers

Por vs para — FAQ

Q01

What is the main difference between por and para?

Por explains cause, route, means, duration, or exchange; para points toward purpose, recipient, destination, or deadline.

Q02

How do I say “for two hours” in Spanish?

For a duration, durante dos horas or simply dos horas is widely neutral. Por dos horas is also common in much of Latin America.

Q03

Is “because of” por or para?

Use por: cancelamos por la lluvia. Use para before an infinitive when you mean “in order to”: salí para comprar pan.

Q04

Which preposition introduces a deadline?

Use para: el proyecto es para el viernes. It points toward the date by which something is expected.

Q05

How can the same noun work with both?

The noun stays the same but its role changes. Lo hice por Ana gives Ana as the reason; lo hice para Ana makes Ana the beneficiary.
